I’ve just received news I didn’t want to hear: a site I chose for printing some of my work is disappearing. VIDA is shutting down at the end of this month, and will be folded into Threadless, a much bigger site.
I chose VIDA when I was looking for nicer scarf options. I found not just them — silk, gorgeous! — but so much more. VIDA was supporting the communities where the work was being produced, and while that meant longer lead times, the results were worth it. Their site was tasteful, the design process was enjoyable, and I was pleased to offer some of my abstract designs on their product options.

Now what? The look of Threadless does not feel like a match for me. There’s more of a focus on clothing, no scarves that I can see, and too much of an overlap with Redbubble, where I’m still very happy.
I delight in having my work on household objects, as well as framed art. It supports my goal of making art generally more accessible. But I also acknowledge that picking art for yourself or others is such an individual choice. It often involves a spark of recognition or connection, and it can be a long decision process. At least, it works that way for me at times, so I’m happy not to pressure anyone else into buying, even as the holiday season approaches.
Sadly, this is not the first site I’ve retreated from, just the most recent. It’s time to regroup. While I have some thoughts, and some options up my sleeve, I’m not going to rush this. If necessary, I have places I can order from directly, should you need something specific. For now, between my gallery in Seattle, Redbubble and my custom order form, let’s call it good for now and see what else manifests over time. But if you have ideas, I’m all ears!
