Project Iterations

With the studio open house wrapped up — but visits by appointment still available! — I’m ready to find a next option for the rectangles project I had on display. While I loved the constraints and scope of creating some of these rectangle sketches, I think I need more than just 5 rectangles in a square. That’s a little TOO minimal for me.

First, I’m trying the rectangle scans as layers that add some structure to other, more organic pieces. Here are a few works in progress to test that theory.

I’m happier with each piece afterwards — a good sign!

Another thought is to combine them in ways that don’t square off, much like I had them hanging at the studio. But: sewn? Hung from something? Attached to panels first? I don’t know…

Generally, I like that they add an element of imposed order over chaos, which means they might be an assist with my previous studio project, Analog Aerials. These are landscapes that look like they were created by looking down from the sky. Or a drone, if I were fancy!

For those pieces, all on panel, I might be able to do that with a hammer and nails, combining them like a puzzle, as perhaps this mockup shows.

For the project as a whole, I’d love to show the connected analog work, the rectangles somehow joined to each other, and some digital work that combines them both. If each of those collections were displayed or printed outside the square somehow, that could be fun. Off to look for options — stay tuned!
