WIP Wednesday: Week 6

More off the list, woo-hoo! Which means I’m ignoring the long-term projects, probably. Ahhh, balance, it’s so much fun. How did you do this week?

Building

I have been itching to transform my Rectangles project, which has been hung in several formations at my studio. (See my spring show post for one example.) An image of red yarn kept popping into my head, until I couldn’t ignore it. Presenting: the Rectangles book!

I might want to add some kind of top coat, and think about adhering the blank sides of the pages together, but for now I’m going to enjoy those gorgeous rough edges as is.

Viewing

The Sum of Our Parts: one in a series by M. Bontrager

It was First Thursday time again in Seattle, yay! Round one was with art buddy Andrea, on Thursday. Of course I started at Lynn Hanson Gallery, to admire the detail and texture in Sherry Ying Ruden’s work, and discover new gallery artist Heather Cornelius.

Around the corner, Lynne Marvet was having her first show at CORE Gallery — congratulations!! And I was happy to see Melana Bontrager’s bright palette at J Rinehart.

Saturday was round two, for Daphne Minkoff at Harris Harvey Gallery. I’ve loved her work for years, and can’t quite articulate why. The theme? The treatment? The abstractions? Yep, all of that.

Daphne Minkoff: Façade of Accessibility #1

I was able to meet Daphne, and had a pleasant chat, but I’m still working on the words to express how deeply her work resonates with me.

Rethinking

Each time I go out to look at art, or see a great artist statement, I cast back to my own work and writing. How can I better express what I’m trying to do, the look I’m going for? After having a goal all last year to revise my statements, I threw up my hands and asked my friend Andrea for help. We are currently noodling on what she came up with. She is suggesting something other than “digital collage artist” and I would love to open up my category of art to encompass a wider swath, from textured photographs to layered abstracts.

It’s led me to thinking more about what look I’m trying to create, and why. I’ve got so many notes about possible revisions to my statement, and it feels like it’s time to write them all on scraps of paper, throw them up in the air, and see what settles! Andrea’s feedback is welcome help in that direction.

Meetings & Making

My regular online art meetups were yet again another opportunity to layer, blend, and play around with texture, nudging my Aerial series along, while chatting, sharing news, and getting feedback.

I was also able to get in some studio time, where I contemplated this monstrosity.

Analog Aerials: pieces of a puzzle?

This is most of my Analog Aerials pieces, attempting to become one large, irregular assemblage. The question is, how? According to my SLMM buddies, anything from velcro to magnets to good old nuts & bolts could do the trick. Hmmm…

It’s good to see these pieces, and compare them to the digital work, ideally to keep them in the same ballpark. And yet — they might be birds of a different feather entirely. Yeah, that might be it, as I see these words appearing. Hopefully you had more clarity than I — how was your creative week?
