I crossed something off my list!! Phew, that helps with a sense of momentum. How did you do this week?
Scanning
My beautiful “Growth in Spelling” book is finally scanned. After a bit of slog — placing each pair of pages just so on the scanner bed, and previewing each spread — I now have 60+ collage layouts like this one finally all in the computer.

I need to figure out what I can do with these pieces — layers? Backgrounds? But mainly, the scanner is freed up! Now I can (a) start another book as a base for collage sketches and (b) start another scanning project, for the Northwest Collage Society, in my role as historian.
Learning
Watercolor lesson 2 is ye olde color wheel, in warm and cool. I’m winging it a bit with the warms and the cools, and the brush selection, and the paper selection — need I go on? But like anything, it helps to get some practice time in, and I do like mixing color!

Up next, I’ll be creating warm and cool neutrals and darks. I also found a few more interesting brushes at a paint store. I’m looking forward to making bigger marks…
Visiting

One of the highlights of my week was catching an art show. A space near me last week, CICA Vancouver, had a small show featuring James Turrell’s first show in Canada. I’ve seen an example of his work in Seattle, at the Henry Art Gallery at the University of Washington. This was a little… less than that.
There were several images, like this one, that changed slowly over time, and there was a good outlay of his large-scale work in the American Southwest. But it wasn’t particularly accessible, with stairs to the upper level, and long videos to be watched while standing. The only place to sit was in front of some prints of his sketches??
I, uh, gave some feedback. :) It was fine for me, but someday it won’t be, and it just didn’t allow me to lose myself in the display.
Meetings & Making

I was invited to join the fun bunch at Arizona Collage Collective on Wednesday night, and made sure to stop by the monthly NWCS hangout the following night. There’s something about chatting that frees up my analytical mind to create with less inhibition. On one of those nights, I worked on this piece.
Some aerial pieces, including this one, hit home, and are going on the more-done-than-not pile. I think I’ve used one of the scribble sketches more than the others — oops, playing favorites. You can see its remnants along the bottom of this piece.
This one and several other works in progress got the same treatment that I’m leaning toward: darker, maps, scribbles, areas of interest and variations in values. It doesn’t always work, but sometimes it’s just the ticket.
How about your creative week?
