Spelling It Out

This long-term project started with an old spelling workbook that caught my eye. The memories of early grade school spelling tests, eek! The book was open on my desk during 2022 and 2023, as a standing task: when I passed through the room, I flipped to random pages and collaged each facing page together,

An early version of the collaged book

Once each page had enough collage on it — whatever that means, but at least two passes — I scanned the results in early 2024, and used those scans as digital collage bases throughout the year. Here’s one of my first attempts, documented in Week 11 of my 2024 work-in-progress project.

By week 44, I was done! Now what? I let the idea rest for a bit, before several discussions led me to a satisfying format: make them back into a book! Finally, I ordered the new digital collages back into book page order (because of course I’d worked on them in random order!) and reassembled them into a book in 2025. Here’s how it looked when it arrived.
