Layered Art

The idea of layers and textures has been in all my recent art, regardless of the choice of media. Matte medium, easy to find and use, and non-toxic, was first. Encaustic took a bit more setup and is a LOT messier, but gave that beautiful luminosity.

Now, I want to explore whether I can get similar effects with digital layering. This image is the first attempt I’ve been pleased with. I used Photoshop Elements 8 to layer textures and existing pieces from my art and photographs, then added some digital sketching for unity.

Certainly, other people have been creating beautiful digital images for years. I suspect, like the other choices, it will have pros and cons I haven’t yet found. And if nothing else, it’s a great way to get at the heart of composition. But I have a feeling there is some real substance here for me. I’m excited!
