So often, my work gets marked as finished, and I’m off to the next thing. But sometimes, I run across the perfect match for sharing a project. This is exactly that: a call from Outsiders and Others for a show called “The Book”, where I have not one, but two versions of an altered book, from my project Spelling It Out. I’m so excited to be included in this show — I love books! — and can’t wait to see what everyone else brings. Join me (details below) to see the result of this multi-year endeavour.
The work started slowly, as daily analog collages that I created in a gorgeous book of elementary grade spelling exercises, building throughout 2022 and 2023. I played with each open spread, so that the sides were related, in conversation, but not identical.

Once the book was filled enough, and each set of pages looked like it was somewhat finished, I scanned each spread of pages. Then I started again, slowly, over the next year, to add digital layers to each scanned piece. Each set of pages got additional colour, plus other scanned elements I’d gathered, and yet the analog collage still shows through.

After I’d worked on each scanned page, I set the project aside for a long while, until the right format occurred to me: I could reassemble the digital work back into book order, and have it printed!
Come see the original analog collages in the physically altered spelling book, plus the newly assembled book of digital collage, which exists only in this book form, and is available to order at the gallery.
