Scraping back, as if through ice and snow, to get to the truth: a slow, painful, necessary process.

Digital collage, 15 layers © 2025 Liz Ruest
From the Pretty/Angry series

Thanks to the advantages of digital layers, I can scrape back for you to document the origins of this piece. At the baseof this piece is one of my many, overworked, ugly collages, painted over with dark colors, attacked with bright magenta marks, sometimes sanded back so I can add more. Then, the challenge of finding compatible layers, that somewhat hide the marks: scribbled collages, some printed pinks, browns, and blues, a touch of a mathematical diagram. The end result shows the sum of all of them, just enough.

These pieces will be printed on demand, mounted to a foamcore backing, and then embossed and incised with additional marks to create a variable edition. The underlying digital work will be the same; each print will have unique marks.
