Hard work can be erased with a dismissal — but what if it’s worth paying attention to?

Digital collage, 12 layers © 2025 Liz Ruest
From the Pretty/Angry series

This piece started with a relatively calm layer: some moulding paste, some pinks at the edge, some dark browns, but most of the markmaking covered up. Well, okay, I can add more: painted red marks, scribbled brown pencil, collaged pen & ink — over top they went. A soft blue and some cream layers covered and lightened the piece; the end result looks like the blue’s been scraped over as a cover-up. What’s the focus: the covering up or the details just peering through?
