This piece has the feel of an excavation, mining for the real truth under so many layers of vanilla blandness.

On the base layer for this piece, there’s some pink, some teal, some orange scribbles, but much of the composition is obliterated by a lot of spackle spread throughout the middle of the work — not much to look at. I added more deep brown brush marks for emphasis, then layered some texture and colour in orange and cream. A triangular geometry diagram, on the left, falls out of what is now a dark orange region. The balance of dark and light, detail and texture, looks just right to me: a piece that could be excavated more, or covered up, as needed.
