The grid pattern that starts with a tile, or is formed by lines in a glass pane, catches my eye. Maybe it appeals to my sense of order, that fallacy that I can impose some structure on nature. Here, I’ve tried to use strong lines from disparate source work together to impose a composition on the underlying unruliness.
This piece starts with a substantial base collage: a kraft paper support is covered with texture from gossamer threads, as well as handmade paper for lots of texture. Digital ayers of terracotta, stone, and monoprinting, not to mention the scanning process, smooth it out.
Rectangles impose a grid on the texture, ranging from carved wooden panels in Edinburgh Castle to modern factory facades along the Chicago river. A sunrise in Victoria adds a horizontal emphasis, with Victorian tile anchoring it.
