Residency: Scottish Compositions

My images from my Scotland trip, AKA my self-administered residency, are ready to be revealed! Unlike a typical residency, I did not create all my work on site; that would have been a MUCH longer trip. Which you know I was trying for, but alas, logistics & such.

For this series, to approximate that idea of on-site creating,  I only used  photographs and materials from the trip. After building up a palette from textures seen around Scotland, and selecting some of my favorite images as focal points , I started layering up as usual. My first forays involve an image and a colored texture or two. Sometimes, I’ll use a texture as its own layer, or as a mask to hide some parts & reveal others. Here are some sample of that initial work:

After building up a few of these studies, I brought in the sketches I’d created, and collages of my impressions of the landscape, as in these examples.

For the full set of images (12 final compositions, 30 studies, 18 collages, 10 color composites, 10 sketches, and too many photos to show you) see my project portfolio, here.

Now, in a traditional residency, I’d have a public presentation of some kind to finalize the work. But I am not traditional, and neither was this trip. For now, I am letting the images rest, deciding if I even want to name them, let alone print them or offer them commercially. Here’s an idea: they would be a great option for trying new methods of printing, say. Some of them might fit into my Details or Familiar Territory series. Any other ideas? I’d love to hear your thoughts.
